On a gentle knoll in the shape of a tomb (dongus), a female bear (ursi) was feeding her young. Threatened by hunters, she took the garments of Ghislain, who had come to clear the region, and took shelter beneath. Led by an eagle to where they were, the monk saw a sign from above. On this site he erected a humble monastery, and there within did give his good services.

Until this day, the eagle and the bear have remained the symbols of the Town of Saint-Ghislain.
