Some key dates



  • 684 : construction of the Benedictine abbey, the legacy of a 7th century monastery (founded by an Athenian bishop), which marked the origin of the Town of Saint-Ghislain
  • Early 9th Century: expansion of the monastery and consecration of a church
  • 881 : fire and pillaging of the monastery by the Normans
  • 1581 : siege by the Huguenots with pillaging
  • 1655 : siege by Turenne and La Ferté followed by the accession of Louis XIV to power, aged seventeen at the time
  • 1657 : siege by Don Juan of Austria
  • 1677 : return of the French with Marshal Humières
  • 1709 : battle of Malplaquet followed by the treaty of Nimègue handing Saint-Ghislain to the Spanish. Hainaut was returned to the allied coalition in its entirety under the command of the Duke of Malborough
  • 1796 Law of 15 fructidor an IV: the monks had to leave the Monastery, the buildings were sold and destroyed.
